Comparison
GEO vs. SEO: two games, two rulebooks.
SEO (search engine optimization) makes a website rank high in Google's results list. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) makes AI assistants like ChatGPT mention and recommend a business in their answer. The core difference: on Google you compete for position 1 of ten visible results – in an AI answer you either appear or you do not exist.
The direct comparison
| Dimension | SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| The result | A list of ten blue links | One answer with two or three names |
| Your goal | Clicks to your website | Being the recommendation in the answer |
| The yardstick | Position in the results list | Mentioned, recommended, first |
| What counts | Keywords, links, tech | Citable answers, mentions, consistency |
| Second place | Still gets clicks | Often does not exist in the answer at all |
| Measurement | Ranking tools, established | Repeated runs with a fixed question panel |
| Time horizon | Months, contested for 25 years | Months – but the field is still open |
When do you need which?
SEO first, if …
your customers search for you and click: online shops with large catalogs, or content that lives on visitor streams. There, the results list is still the main road.
GEO first, if …
your customers want a recommendation: hotel, practice, law firm, trades, restaurant. Whoever asks "Which provider fits me?" gets an answer with names – and then books directly.
The honest answer: both – in the right order
GEO does not replace SEO, it builds on it: a technically clean, well-structured website is the foundation for both games. But the rules on top differ – and while the same competitors have fought over the same Google positions for years, the recommendation slots in AI answers are being handed out right now. That is exactly why starting early pays.
Does GEO replace my SEO?
No. SEO stays important as long as people google. GEO takes care of the growing share who ask an AI instead. Clean SEO is even a foundation for GEO – structured, fast websites are easier for AIs to read too.
Does my good Google ranking help with ChatGPT?
Only indirectly. AIs build answers from what they read about you – not from your Google position. A business can rank first on Google and still be missing from AI answers because its content is not citable or mentions are lacking.
Can my SEO agency do GEO?
Partly. Good SEO agencies master the foundations (structure, structured data). What is usually missing: measurement via a fixed question panel and the work on citable answers and mentions. Ask for exactly that – and for proof of impact.
